The ultimate goal of every Foundation grant dollar is to empower young people to make the right life choices.

NAMI Howard County

National Alliance of Mental Illness

NAMI was founded in Madison, Wisconsin by Harriet Shetler and Beverly Young. The two women both had sons diagnosed with schizophrenia, and "were tired of being blamed for their sons' mental illness". Unhappy with the lack of services available and the treatment of those living with mental illness, the women sought out others with similar concerns. The first meeting held to address these issues in mental health led to the formation of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill in 1979. In 1997, the legal name was changed to the acronym, NAMI.

Columbia Community Cares

Columbia, Maryland

A group that started with about 40 members now has nearly 10,000 members. With an abundance of volunteers, donors, and community partners, Columbia Community Care (CCC) has been providing food and services to tens of thousands of Howard County residents since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The overwhelming growth of our CCC food distribution centers (Wilde Lake Interfaith Center, Long Reach Village Center, and The Barn in Oakland Mills Village Center) has been a reflection of the demand and need for supplemental support for Howard County.

From CCC’s inception, we have fundraised well over $1 million in donations and grants and received hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of product donations. Columbia Community Care has shown the true heart of Columbia and Howard County.

Howard County Public School System

Learning and Leading With Equity

Howard County, Maryland is a suburban community of more than 330,000 situated midway along the Baltimore-Washington corridor. It is a county of contrasts — a blend of old and new, urban and rural, historical and progressive. The county’s borders encompass Ellicott City, one of the country’s oldest towns, and Columbia, a planned community conceived and designed 55 years ago by The Rouse Company. The Columbia, Maryland Chapter partners with Howard County Public Schools by providing school supplies to Howard County Public School after-school programs as well as providing Holiday gifts for underserved students through our annual Corduroy’s Closet event.
